The Courtesans of the Matsuba by Kitagawa Utamaro - Vintage Japanese Art Poster Print
The Courtesans Yoyotose and Yoyoginu of the Matsuba-ya is a famous artwork created by Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro in the late 18th century. The piece is a part of Utamaro's series of prints called "Ten Studies in Female Physiognomy," which depicts the diverse facial expressions and moods of women. The artwork features two courtesans, Yoyotose and Yoyoginu, from the Matsuba-ya brothel in Edo (now Tokyo). The women are portrayed in intricate and detailed kimonos, with Yoyotose sitting in the foreground holding a fan while Yoyoginu stands behind her. The piece showcases Utamaro's mastery of the ukiyo-e style, a popular form of Japanese woodblock printing that often depicted scenes of everyday life in the pleasure quarters of Japan's major cities.
